Apple TV, IPods and ITunes all get a makeover!

Apple introduced movie and TV streaming through its second-generation Apple TV Wednesday, as well as a new generation of iPods, an updated iTunes store with 99-cent TV show rentals and a music-based social network that allows users to connect with each other as well as their favorite artists.

As expected, the new Apple TV is a simpler and cheaper device than its previous product.

"We introduced it four years ago, but it's never been a huge hit — nor has any competitive product," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs said at the Apple Music Event in San Francisco.

Prices for TV show rentals —which now cost $2.99 through the iTunes Store — will be 99 cents, Jobs said. Offerings will be from ABC and Fox; "we hope the other studios will see the light and get on board with us."

First run, high-definition movies will be available for $4.99 on the same day they come out on DVD, he said.

Netflix, YouTube, Flickr and MobileMe users will also be able to stream movies, videos, music and photos to their sets using Apple TV.

Customers "said the No. 1, 2 and 3 things they wanted are Hollywood movies and TV shows, whenever they want them," Jobs said. What they don't want, Jobs said, it to have to deal with synching content from a computer to a TV, or worrying about where to store such huge files.

The previous price for Apple TV was $229. The new price is $99. It will be available in about a month.

Jobs said consumers will see the new Apple TV as a "phenomenal way to watch Hollywood movies and TV shows in your living room whenever you want," as well to stream movies and other content from other sources "right onto your TV."

Technology analyst Michael Gartenberg, a partner with Altimeter Group, a research and advisory firm, said the new Apple TV "is to television what iPhones were to phones three years ago." The stage, he said "is set for mass market adoption."

The battle for streaming to the TV screen is heating up; both Amazon and Google are looking to get into the arena.

Amazon is trying to create a service that gives paying subscribers unlimited access to some television shows and movies over the Internet, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, although the Seattle-based company declined to comment about it.

Google, which owns YouTube, is reportedly negotiating with Hollywood studios to launch a pay-per-view service by the end of the year in the United States.

The search giant also has plans for Google TV, partnering with Intel and Sony to develop “Google TV” to bring video from the Web to TV sets.

There are devices, including those made by Roku and Boxee, that now do such streaming to TV sets. Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey, commeting for Reuters on Twitter, noted that the new Apple TV "looks more and more like a Roku Box every minute."

New iPods, iPod Touch with camera

New iPods include a new iPod Touch with a camera that can use its popular FaceTime video calling program, as well as a multi-touch iPod Nano, and an iPod Shuffle that bring backs buttons on the device.

The new iPod Touch, the highest-end iPod, will have the same camera in it that the iPhone 4 does for video calling, using a program called FaceTime. Jobs said iPod Touch users will be able to make video calls to both others with iPod Touches and iPhone 4s by using the device's Wi-Fi program. The iPod Touch will also have a rear-facing camera for HD video recording, something that users had wanted last year.

Prices for the new iPod Touch will range from $229 to $399. The iPod Touch will use Apple's A4 processor chip, the same one used in the iPhone 4 and the iPad.

The $49 Shuffle is the lowest-end music player in Apple's line. Like the past generation, it can speak the names of playlists and songs. But unlike the most recent of the tiny music players, it brings back the square shape and buttons of Apple's second-generation Shuffle.

The new sqaure-shaped Nano will cost $149 in an 8-gigabyte version, $179 in a 16-gigabyte version. Like previous versions, the Nano has a built-in FM tuner and can display photos.

All three iPods will start shipping next week, Jobs said.

Jobs also says iPhone users will be getting a software update that offers the ability to upload high-definition video over Wi-Fi. And when people take photos, the new software will save three slightly different copies that, when combined, make for a sharper image.

The new software will be available next week for free, initially for Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch.

Jobs appeared at a media event in a crewneck rather than his trademark mock turtleneck.

Jobs said the company has sold more than 120 million iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads since 2007, and that 230,000 devices are being activated daily.

The numbers were shared as a reference to Google's Android, which has boasted activation of 300,000 phones a day. Jobs said Apple's number refer to "new" devices, where others — he didn't specify by name — include "upgrades."

Jobs also said Apple's Game Center, announced last spring, has significant improvements, including leader boards and achievement rankings.

Jobs also said the operating system for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad will get a significant fix nedt week with iOS 4.1, including "a lot of bugs" for the iPhone 3G, proximity sensors and Bluetooth.

'Ping' social network for music announced by Apple

"Ping," a social network for Apple's iTunes Store music users was also unveiled.

Jobs said there are more than 160 million iTunes accounts now in 23 countries. The iTunes Store "is clearly the No. 1 online media store in the world," he said. "Today we're really excited to launch iTunes 10," which includes Ping. "It's a social network all about music.

"You can follow people (on Ping) and be followed," Jobs said, with "just one click."

The privacy is "super-simple to set up," and "you can get as private as you want," he said.

Ping will be available for users of the iPhone and iPod Touch. It will be built into iTunes 10, which will be made available Wednesday.

"We think this is going to be really popular really fast bec 160 million users can turn it on as soon as they want — today," Jobs said.

1. The Russian mafia and Russian oligarchs are found to be large investors with Madoff. During the next few weeks, a well-known CNBC investigative reporter documents that the Russian oligarchs, certain members of the Russian mafia and several Colombian drug cartel families have invested and laundered more than $2 billion in Madoff's strategy through offshore master feeders and through several fund of funds. There are several unsuccessful attempts made on Madoff and/or his family's lives. With the large Russian investments in Madoff having gone sour and in light of the subsequent acts of violence against his family, U.S./Russian relations, which already were at a low point, are threatened. Madoff's lawyers disclose that he has cancer, and his trial is delayed indefinitely as he undergoes chemotherapy.

2. Housing stabilizes sooner than expected. President Obama, under the aegis of Larry Summers, initiates a massive and unprecedented Marshall Plan to turn the housing market around. His plan includes several unconventional measures: Among other items is a $25,000 tax credit on all home purchases as well as a large tax credit and other subsidies to the financial intermediaries that provide the mortgage loans and commitments. This, combined with a lowering in mortgage rates (and a boom in refinancing), the bankruptcy/financial restructuring of three public homebuilders (which serves to lessen new home supply) and a flip-flop in the benefits of ownership vs. the merits of renting, trigger a second-quarter 2009 improvement in national housing activity, but the rebound is uneven. While the middle market rebounds, the high-end coastal housing markets remain moribund, as they impacted adversely by the Wall Street layoffs and the carnage in the hedge fund industry.

3. The nation's commercial real estate markets experience only a shallow pricing downturn in the first half of 2009. President Obama's broad-ranging housing legislation incorporates tax credits and other unconventional remedies directed toward nonresidential lending and borrowing. Banks become more active in office lending (as they do in residential real estate lending), and the commercial mortgage-backed securities market never experiences anything like the weakness exhibited in the 2007 to 2008 market. Office REIT shares, similar to housing-related equities, rebound dramatically, with several doubling in the new year's first six months.

4. The U.S. economy stabilizes sooner than expected. After a decidedly weak January-to-February period (and a negative first-quarter 2009 GDP reading, which is similar to fourth-quarter 2008's black hole), the massive and creative stimulus instituted by the newly elected President begins to work. Banks begin to lend more aggressively, and lower interest rates coupled with aggressive policy serve to contribute to an unexpected refinancing boom. By March, personal consumption expenditures begin to rebound slowly from an abysmal holiday and post-holiday season as energy prices remain subdued, and a shallow recovery occurs far sooner than many expect. Second-quarter corporate profits growth comfortably beats the downbeat and consensus forecasts as inflation remains tame, commodity prices are subdued, productivity rebounds and labor costs are well under control.

5. The U.S. stock market rises by close to 20% in the year's first half. Housing-related stocks (title insurance, home remodeling, mortgage servicers and REITs) exhibit outsized and market-leading gains during the January-to-June interval. Heavily shorted retail and financial stocks also advance smartly. The year's first-half market rise of about 20% is surprisingly orderly throughout the six-month period, as volatility moves back down to pre-2008 levels, but rising domestic interest rates, still weak European economies and a halt to China's economic growth limit the stock market's progress in the back half of the year.

6. A second quarter "growth scare" bursts the bubble in the government bond market. The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note moves steadily higher from 2.10% at year-end to over 3.50% by early fall, putting a ceiling on the first-half recovery in the U.S. stock market, which is range-bound for the remainder of the year, settling up by approximately 20% for the 12-month period ending Dec. 31, 2009. Foreign central banks, faced with worsening domestic economies, begin to shy away from U.S. Treasury auctions and continue to diversify their reserve assets. By year-end, the U.S. dollar represents less than 60% of worldwide reserve assets, down from 2008's year-end at 62% and down from 70% only five years ago. China's 2008 economic growth proves to be greatly exaggerated as unemployment surprisingly rises in early 2009 and the rate of growth in China's real GDP moves towards zero by the second quarter. Unlike more developed countries, the absence of a social safety net turns China's fiscal economic policy inward and aggressively so. Importantly, China not only is no longer a natural buyer of U.S. Treasuries but it is forced to dip into it's piggy bank of foreign reserves, adding significant upside pressure to U.S. note and bond yields.

7. Commodities markets remain subdued. Despite an improving domestic economy, a further erosion in the Western European and Chinese economies weighs on the world's commodities markets. Gold never reaches $1,000 an ounce and trades at $500 an ounce at some point during the year. (Gold-related shares are among 2009's worst stock market performers.) The price of crude oil briefly rallies early in the year after a step up in the violence in the Middle East but trades in a broad $25 to $65 range for all of 2009 as President Obama successfully introduces aggressive and meaningful legislation aimed at reducing our reliance on imported oil. The price of gasoline briefly breaches $1.00 a gallon sometime in the year. The U.S. dollar outperforms most of the world's currencies as the U.S. regains its place as an economic and political powerhouse.

8. Capital spending disappoints further. Despite an improving economy, large-scale capital spending projects continue to be delayed in favor of maintenance spending. Technology shares continue to lag badly, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD Quote - Cramer on AMD - Stock Picks) files bankruptcy.

9. The hedge fund and fund of funds industries do not recover in 2009. The Madoff fraud, poor hedge fund performance and renewed controversy regarding private equity marks (particularly among a number of high-profile colleges like Harvard and Yale) prove to be a short-term death knell to the alternative investments industry. As well, the gating of redemption requests disaffects high net worth, pension plan, endowment and University investors to both traditional hedge funds and to private equity (which suffers from a series of questionable and subjective marking of private equity deal pricings at several leading funds). Three of the 10 largest hedge funds close their doors as numerous hedge funds reduce their fee structures in order to retain investors. Faced with an increasingly uncertain investor base, several big hedge funds merge with like-sized competitors in a quickening hedge fund industry consolidation. By year-end, the number of hedge funds is down by well over 50%.

10. Mutual fund redemptions from 2008 reverse into inflows in 2009. The mutual fund industry does not suffer the same fate as the hedge fund industry. In fact, a renaissance of interest in mutual funds (especially of a passive/indexed kind) develops. Fidelity is the largest employer of the graduating classes (May 2009) at the Wharton and Harvard Business Schools; it goes public in late 2009 in the year's largest IPO. Shares of T. Rowe Price (TROW Quote - Cramer on TROW - Stock Picks) and AllianceBernstein (AB Quote - Cramer on AB - Stock Picks) enjoy sharp price gains in the new year. Bill Miller retires from active fund management at Legg Mason (LM Quote - Cramer on LM - Stock Picks).

11. State and municipal imbalances and deficits mushroom. The municipal bond market seizes up in the face of poor fiscal management, revenue shortfalls and rising budgets at state and local levels. Municipal bond yields spike higher. A new Municipal TARP totaling $2 trillion is introduced in the year's second half.

12. The automakers and the UAW come to an agreement over wages. Under the pressure of late first-quarter bankruptcies, the UAW agrees to bring compensation in line with non-U.S. competitors and exchanges a reduction in retiree health care benefits for equity in the major automobile manufacturers.

13. The new administration replaces SEC Commissioner Cox. Upon his inauguration, President Obama immediately replaces SEC Commissioner Christopher Cox with Yale professor Dr. Jeffrey Sonnenfeld. The new SEC commissioner recommends that the uptick rule be reinstated and undertakes a yearlong investigation/analysis into the impact of Ultra Bear ETFs on the market. Later in the year, the administration recommends that the SEC be abolished and folded into the Treasury Department. Dr. Sonnenfeld returns to Yale University.

14. Large merger of equals deals multiply. Economies of scale and mergers of equals become the M&A mantras in 2009, and niche investment banking boutiques such as Evercore (EVR Quote - Cramer on EVR - Stock Picks), Lazard (LAZ Quote - Cramer on LAZ - Stock Picks) and Greenhill (GHL Quote - Cramer on GHL - Stock Picks) flourish. Goldman Sachs and Citigroup announce a merger of equals, but Goldman maintains management control of the combined entity. Morgan Stanley (MS Quote - Cramer on MS - Stock Picks) acquires Blackstone. Disney (DIS Quote - Cramer on DIS - Stock Picks) purchases Carnival (CCL Quote - Cramer on CCL - Stock Picks). Microsoft (MSFT Quote - Cramer on MSFT - Stock Picks) acquires Yahoo! (YHOO Quote - Cramer on YHOO - Stock Picks) at $5 a share.

15. Focus shifts for several media darlings. Though continuing on CNBC, Jim "El Capitan" Cramer announces his own reality show that will air on NBC in the fall. At the time his reality show premieres, he also writes a new book, Stay Mad for Life: How to Prosper From a Buy/Hold Investment Strategy. Dr. Nouriel Roubini continues to talk depression, but the price of his speaking engagements are cut in half. He writes a new book, The New Depression: How Leverage's Long Tail Will Result in Bread Lines. "Kudlow & Company's" Larry Kudlow proclaims that it's time to harvest the "mustard seeds" of growth and, in an admission of the Democrats' growing economic successes, officially leaves the ranks of the Republican party and returns to his Democratic roots. Yale's Dr. Robert Shiller adopts a variant and positive view on housing and the economy, joining the bullish ranks, and writes a new book, The New Financial Order: Economic Opportunity in the 21st Century.

16. The Internet becomes the tactical nuke of the digital age. The Web is invaded on many levels as governments, consumers and investors freak out. First, an act of cyberterrorism occurs that compromises the security of a major government (similar to the attacks this year emanating from the Chinese military aimed at the German Chancellery) or uses DoS against media and e-commerce sites. Second, a major data center will fail and will be far worse than the 1988 Cornell student incident that infected about 5% of the Unix boxes on the early Internet. Third, cybercrime explodes exponentially in 2008. Financial markets will be exposed to hackers using elaborate fraud schemes (such as liquidating and sweeping online brokerage accounts and shorting stocks, then employing a denial-of-service attack against the company). Fourth, Storm Trojan reappears. (Same as last year.)

17. A handful of sports franchises file bankruptcy. Three Major League Baseball teams fail in the middle of the season and seek government bailouts in order to complete the season. The Wilpon family, victimized by Madoff, sells the New York Mets to SAC's Steve Cohen. The New York Yankees are undefeated in the 2009 season, and Madonna and A-Rod have a child together (out of wedlock).

18. The Fox Business Network closes. Racked by large losses, Rupert Murdoch abandons the Fox Business Network. CNBC rehires several prior employees and expands its programming into complete weekend coverage. Two popular CNBC commentators "go mainstream" and become regulars on NBC news programs.

19. Old, leveraged media implode. The worlds of leverage and old media collide in a massive flameout of previous leveraged deals. Univision and Clear Channel go bankrupt. The New York Times (NYT Quote - Cramer on NYT - Stock Picks) teeters financially.

20. The Middle East's infrastructure build-out is abruptly halted owing to "market conditions." Lower oil prices, weakening European economies and a broad overexpansion wreak havoc with the Middle East's markets and economies.

It’s a reprise of a psychological ploy the Bulldogs used last year for a big win over Auburn in Athens and a Sugar Bowl win over Hawaii in New Orleans.
When the Dogs wore black jerseys against Auburn on Nov. 10, it was the first time in modern history they had done so.
Richt said the team’s seniors approached him about the possibility of wearing black for Alabama on the flight back from this past Saturday’s win at Arizona State. He also said he was asked by fans, “in every Bulldog Club I went to” during the offseason, when the next blackout would be.
“Fans were writing letters trying to say which one it should be,” Richt said. “You wouldn’t think it’s that big of a deal, but it really is.”
Also Sunday, the Georgia-Alabama game gained added luster when ESPN said its “College GameDay” show will air from Athens on Saturday morning for the first time in a decade. The last time “GameDay” visited Athens was Oct. 10, 1998, when Georgia lost to Tennessee.
The two-hour pregame show — with host Chris Fowler and analysts Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard — travels around the country, giving a sort of signature to each week’s big game.
And Georgia-Alabama is big.
Both teams are unbeaten, both ranked in the nation’s top 10 and both coming off impressive victories — Georgia’s 27-10 win at Arizona State and Alabama’s 49-14 win at Arkansas.
ESPN spokesman Michael Humes said Sunday that details aren’t available yet about where the GameDay set will be located in Athens. ESPN generally prefers the stadium as the backdrop, but construction around Sanford Stadium has led Georgia to suggest other campus sites.
The show, sponsored by Atlanta-based Home Depot, will air from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.
As previously announced, ESPN also will televise the game, which was moved last week to a 7:45 p.m. kickoff.
Richt said the senior players first asked him in the summer about possibly wearing black for the Alabama game, but he rejected the idea at the time because of concern about September weather. “You don’t want to wear black jerseys in the middle of a hot sunny day,” he said.
But when the players approached Richt about the idea again on the flight back from Arizona, noting the game had been moved to night, he agreed.
“I don’t think you do it too much, but our fans really enjoyed it [and] our players certainly enjoyed it [last year],” Richt said. “I thought of the outstanding success as far as the fans buying into the request of the seniors [to wear black] and the fans just having a ball with it. I would think they would get excited about the blackout again.”

According to Jenn it was an uncontested divorce and Ryan Newell did not need to appear.

She later cried when telling of the support she has recieved from her mom, dad, brother, and friends.

She said her dad called her and said "he was glad to be the man in her life again", this made her cry.

Athens - Georgia offensive tackle Trinton Sturdivant will undergo reconstructive surgery on his injured left knee and will be out for the season, coach Mark Richt confirmed Tuesday morning in a statement released through the sports communications office.
Sturdivant, considered Georgia's best lineman, injured the knee midway through the top-ranked Bulldogs' first full-squad scrimmage of the preseason Monday afternoon at Sanford Stadium.
Sturdivant (6-5, 293) started every game as a true freshman last season. The date for his surgery has not been set.

Former NBA all-star Joe Barry Carroll claims in a lawsuit that he was humiliated and traumatized by the way he was treated in a Buckhead restaurant.
Carroll filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday against the Tavern at Phipps, alleging he and a friend, who are black, were asked to leave the restaurant's bar because they refused to give up their seats to two white women.
"I was shocked that it ever happened," said Carroll, 50, now an investment adviser. "But since I've gotten over the shock, I've felt I have a responsibility to promote some conversation, some discussion about this."
A former Purdue University star, Carroll was the top pick in the 1980 NBA draft. He moved to Atlanta in 1991 after a 10-year career in which he averaged 17.7 points a game.
Greg Greenbaum, who owns the 17-year-old Phipps Plaza restaurant, disagreed with Carroll's assertions.
"I don't feel we've done anything wrong," Greenbaum said Wednesday. "We don't discriminate."
Carroll and attorney Joseph Shaw went to the Tavern after work Aug. 11, 2006. They sat at the bar and ordered drinks and food.
A short time later, a bartender asked them to give up their seats for two white women. There were "several white males" also at the bar, but none of them was asked to move, the suit says.
Carroll and Shaw politely declined, but the bartender told them it was the Tavern's custom for men to give up their seats at the bar to women, the suit says. Carroll and Shaw were then told repeatedly by two other Tavern employees to give up their seats, while none of the white men at the bar was asked to do so, the suit says.
Carroll and Shaw, saying they wanted to finish their meal, still declined to leave their seats at the bar. So the Tavern management called a security guard who escorted the two men out of the restaurant, the suit says.
Carroll and Shaw soon filed a complaint before the city of Atlanta's Human Relations Commission.
After a hearing, the panel found the Tavern discriminated against the men on the basis of their gender "and, arguably, their race."
"In light of the long racial history between black and white, the commission can't help but to wince at the notion of expressly sanctioning a practice that would have the effect of requiring an African-American to relinquish his or her seat to a Caucasian patron," its Oct. 10, 2007, ruling said. It added that "race was a factor in the escalation of the situation."
Greenbaum said Wednesday that Carroll and Shaw were not targeted because they were African-American. "But we may be more preferential to women," he said.
"We're all Southern gentlemen," Greenbaum said. "It creates a nice social environment when gentlemen give up their seats at the bar. That's the way we like to do business. It's a courtesy to our female guests."
Shaw, a criminal defense attorney, said Wednesday he plans to file his own suit.
Carroll, represented by lawyers Gerry Weber and Hollie Manheimer, seeks unspecified damages and a court order ensuring free and unfettered access at the bar, without regard to race or gender. Carroll said he will donate any jury award to charity.
"This was absolutely different from simply asking us to give up our seats for some ladies," he said. "This is the kind of not-so-subtle discrimination that happens too often."

I love that place but the whole thing is a little shady, that said they could have given up their seats to ladies.

My take, their is a perception, real or myth, that black people do not tip well so I suspect the bar staff did not want them taking up seats when they could have two hotties sitting at the bar and men coming over and buying them drinks. Beautiful women at a bar makes a bar more attractive.

Athens — It was easy to spot the star of Georgia's incoming freshman class Monday.

Just elbow your way through about a dozen reporters and there he sat, reclining in a padded chair, long legs splayed, looking his questioners in the eye as he fielded questions for about 15 minutes.
"Is this what it was like for you in high school after practice?" someone asked.
A.J. Green smiled and said, "More like game days."
Green's reputation alone is enough to excite people. He was ranked the No. 2 wide receiver in the nation by Scout.com. Along with kicker Blair Walsh, he might be the most highly anticipated freshman of the season. He's big (6-feet-4, 197 pounds) and he's fast (4.6 seconds in the 40).
Besides Mohamed Massaquoi, the Bulldogs do not boast another go-to guy at wide receiver. Fans hope Green will be that player.
So the buzz soared even more at practice after his teammates spoke so highly of him.
Cornerback Asher Allen said from what he's seen, Green has it all: Hands. Explosiveness. Competitive edge. Work ethic. The "it" factor.
"Mohamed is really good with his hands, really quick. Kenneth Harris is a big body, able to move that big body. Kris Durham – tall, lanky but can catch fast. I think A.J. has a little bit of everybody's best qualities in him," Allen said. "I think that's really, really good. He can do a lot of things."
Quarterback Matthew Stafford was equally complimentary, though he knows the SEC can be difficult for freshmen. "He's going to have some tough times, but he has the potential to be really, really good," he said.
The Bulldogs have been working out only in shorts. So does all that praise raise the stakes a little for a player who hasn't even put on pads yet?
"A little more pressure, but I think I can handle it," said Green, who suffered a hip flexor strain in his first practice Monday.
As a senior at Summerville High School in South Carolina, he caught 72 passes for 1,437 yards and 15 touchdowns. He compares himself to New England Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss, but only on the field.
"I'm not a trouble guy," he said, referring to Moss' off-the-field incidents.
Massaquoi guided Green through summer drills and said he considers him to be like a younger brother.
"He's a guy that I wish the world for," Massaquoi said. "Anything that I can [do to] help him, I'm willing to do."
As for pitting himself against the defense, Green said he's had some battles with cornerback Prince Miller, even though Miller is about eight inches shorter.
"He's real good," Green said.
Green committed to Georgia in the fall of 2006, wanting to get the deed out of the way so he could focus on school. Despite some pushing from Florida, he stayed firm with his decision.
"[I would] just tell them how solid I'm committed to Georgia and nothing can change my mind," he said. "I just liked the coaching staff, Coach Richt and everybody. I think this is the place for me."

As it turns out, one of the better competitions of preseason camp might be at backup tailback.
Coach Mark Richt was asked after practice Tuesday what the competition was looking like at No. 3 tailback. He responded with, “There’s still competition at No. 2.”
It’s generally been assumed that the No. 2 spot would be held down by heralded redshirt freshman Caleb King and that’s how the depth chart was set coming into camp. But Georgia has continued to recruit at the position and two of its signees from last year, Richard Samuel and Dontavius Jackson, were early enrollees and went through spring practice. Carlton Thomas of Frostproof, Fla., joined the group this summer. And you can’t forget about walkon sophomore Kalvin Daniels, who has often drawn the praise of coaches.
Samuel, in particular, continues to generate positive commentary from coaches and apparently is a very cerebral player. Richt was talking about how all of them look very impressive carrying the football. The key, he said, was going to come down to how they perform “when Coach Ball walks away and goes to the sideline.” In other words, when the players have to think for themselves and carry out their assignments not only correctly but handle them excellently. That, of course, goes deeper than carrying the football.
Again, the general thinking is that Georgia will operate with three scholarship tailbacks and the other two will redshirt. Not necessarily, Richt said.
“We’re not saying it’s etched in stone that two are going to redshirt,” he said. “Special teams are very important. Our feeling is if a player can maybe start on three special teams, that’s worth playing.”
Meanwhile, I talked to Caleb on Monday for a story I’m doing later and was asking him about goals for this season. I asked him if he was hoping for 10 carries a game this season. He grinned widely and said “at least that many.”
Clearly, he’ll have to prove he’s worthy of that many.

Jim Cramer is a JOKE!

So I have to admit I have watched Jim on Mad Money for a couple years now and watch his videos on thestreet.com and read his articles on bloggingstocks for about the same amount of time.

His show is humorous and I have said for two years now that the value in Jim was not on individual stocks but on big trends. For example, the natural gas trend, 2008 THE YEAR OF NATURAL GAS.

To Jim's credit, he was among the first to discuss the gravity of the credit crisis and subprime and in all honesty he saved me tens of thousands of dollars in talking about getting out of financials. I was in many of them, Bank of America, Citi, Regions, Wachovia and based on his advice I exited many with gains still in tact or at worst very small losses.

Now to why I say Jim is a joke. All year long and as recently as late last month Jim was touting natural gas and it going to $16. Then oil fell below support and natural gas fell too, to the high $9 range. At this point Jim said these stocks, natural gas stocks, looked like buys and natural gas would bottom at $8.99. Yesterday, natural gas and natural gas stocks plummeted and today Jim says in a video on thestreet.com that natural gas is going to $8 and in the same video, thirty seconds later, says, well, maybe $7.

There comes a point where if you don't know what's going on, just SHUT THE HELL UP! Stop making forecasts. God damn, if you make 50 forecasts, eventually you'll be right.

So the reason why I watched Jim is now gone as he is not even right on the big trends. Will I tune in at somepoint? Yah, but only for laughs and to see him act the clown he is and rip the heads off plastic bears and chew on plastic bulls and yell boo-yah and ski-daddy and see the rest of his comical act. Jim Cramer is no longer credible, he is the freak show act in the back tent of the circus.

After Georgia’s first practice ended yesterday, coveted freshman wide receiver A.J. Green came into the team meeting room and was immediately swarmed by the assembled media there. If there was any doubt as to whom was the most anticipated new player on the Bulldogs’ roster this year, it was removed at that moment as I watched Green sit down and disappear into the middle of a huddle of a dozen or so reporters.
I stood just outside the circle so I could listen and pipe in if needed (reporter Jenna Marina, who is helping us out on Georgia in August and writing a story on Green today, was right in the middle of it). As I observed the scene, it got me thinking, “funny how things work out.”
I thought back to February of 2005. Coach Mark Richt was experiencing one of the more challenging periods of his career at that time (anything is second to this current one). Defensive ends coach and special teams guru Jon Fabris decided to leave Georgia for Oklahoma about the same time that defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder left for the NFL and running backs coach Ken Rucker left for Texas. Not long before then Richt had talked D-line coach and recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner out of leaving Georgia for a coordinator’s position at LSU.
Anyway, Fabris had left and was gone for a short while before having a change of heart and asking Richt if he’d take him back. Of course, Richt did.
Good thing for Fabris and for Georgia that Richt had not already hired a replacement. So Fabris comes back and a year and a half later, he goes to Summerville, S.C., and convinces A.J. Green to commit to the Bulldogs in October of 2006. And, perhaps more remarkably, despite some of the most intense recruiting efforts ever by Georgia rivals, Fabris managed get Green to stay true to that commitment (for the record, Fabris gives Green all the credit for this).
I recount all of this because — and I’m trying not to overhype this situation — I think Green may turn out to be one of Georgia’s most significant signees in a while. I know, I know, it’s been only one practice and Green “tweaked” a groin injury in that one. But folks, sometimes it’s just very evident when a player is the real deal. Not only does Green look the part of a dominant wide receiver (6-4, 200 pounds), he illustrates it every time he runs a route and hauls into his big strong hands a torpedoed pass like it was a little Nerf ball. And he appeared a lot faster than I had originally expected. Any time fellow players, upperclassmen no less, come in from practice buzzing about the “new kid” like they did Green yesterday, you know you may have something special on your hands.
And Green talks the talk. Though he’s not a braggart by any stretch, Green is clearly confident and not at all overwhelmed by mass of attention and expectations. That can be as important as what one can do on the field.
Of course, as Fabris did in 2005, Garner stayed on and Tony Ball came in as running backs coach and the next year the two of them helped convince a running back out of New Jersey named Knowshon to come South to play football.
Funny how things work out.

New COLLEGE FOOTBALL RULES for 2008!

The NCAA is instituting several new rules for the 2008 football season. They are:
• The play clock will be set to 40 seconds and will start when the ball is blown dead on the previous play. The old 25-second clock will be used on the referee's signal after a penalty, measurement, change of possession or timeout.
• The game clock will now start on the referee's signal and not on the snap following a play that goes out of bounds except for during the last two minutes of each half.
• There will be no 5-yard incidental facemask penalty. Instead a facemask penalty will always be 15 yards but only will be called for twisting, turning or pulling.
• "Horse-collar" tackles, in which a defender grabs a ballcarrier inside the back collar of the shoulder pads or jersey and pulls him down, will be flagged as unnecessary roughness and given a 15-yard penalty. The rule will not apply inside the tackle box or to a quarterback in the pocket.
• Any contact made with the crown of a helmet will result in a 15-yard penalty.

Since so many of the children seem to take an impolite delight in real estate schadenfreude, let's go back and have a look-see at the asking price history for this property. The hillside house in the Los Feliz neighborhood was first plopped on the market in April of 2008 with an optimistic asking price of $3,195,000. Just about a month later the asking price was hacked to $2,995,000, then a month later it was given another $200,000 haircut to $2,795,000 where it sat for another four or five weeks when it was given another $200,000 ka-rah-tay chop to its current asking price of $2,595,000.Anyhoo, the listing for the 3 bedroom and 3.5 bathroom residence is now marked, "Looking for Backup" indicating that the property has entered escrow and will soon be sold...if the deal sticks together. Your Mama is sure that Missus Lewis and Brown are happy as pigs in shit that the house has finally sold and so are we because the more houses they sell the more likely we'll get to watch Jeff's crazy obsessive ass on the tee-vee.Your Mama will let the children and the Chicken Littles discuss and duke it out about whether the $600,000 price reduction is a result of the house being over priced to begin with or if it's a reflection of the state of the market.

Bravo finally confirmed today that, yes, there is a “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” coming to the cable network later this summer.
Here’s how Bravo is spinning it in its press release:
Bravo is heading south for its newest installment, “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.” The seven episode series will follow five women from Atlanta’s social elite - from NBA and NFL wives to sassy single moms - as they juggle their burgeoning careers and busy home lives with the whirl of the south’s hottest city.
Rumors have been floating around for months and the gossip Web site Young Black and Fabulous provided juicy details of four of the five women on June 9.
This follows the original, trashy “The Real Housewives of the O.C.,” the offshoot “The Real Housewives of New York City” and soon “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.” Apparently, Bravo thinks it has its very own “CSI” franchise.
The first 30-minute preview special airs Wednesday, July 30 at midnight after a rebroadcast of “Project Runway.” A specific launch date for the series has not bee set yet.

The only name as a local Atlantan that I know is Eric Snow, the NBA player. His wife will be on the show and is the woman sitting and in the purple dress.

NEW YORK -- Lara Logan, the chief foreign affairs correspondent for CBS News, tells The Washington Post she is pregnant, and the father is a married federal contractor whom she met while stationed in Iraq.
Logan's relationship with Joseph Burkett _ who's in the midst of a divorce from wife Kimberly, with whom he has a 3-year-old daughter _ has made media headlines, including the front page of the New York Post.
Logan is going through a divorce from estranged husband Jason Siemon, a Chicago-based energy lobbyist whom she married in 1998.
"Nobody likes to read about themselves like that, especially the way it's been sensationalized," Logan, 37, told The Washington Post. "I hated it. But I'm just going to rise above it and keep going."
Logan, whose pregnancy was unplanned, told the newspaper her due date is in January, and she's "looking forward to being a mom."
Logan _ a South Africa native who began dating Burkett following her November breakup with CNN correspondent Michael Ware _ said she and Burkett plan to marry eventually.
Logan's publicist, Tom Keaney, declined to comment.
The reporter _ known for her intrepid war coverage _ was promoted to CBS' chief foreign affairs correspondent last month, and is based in Washington.
Logan, a contributor to "60 Minutes," has won numerous reporting accolades, including an Emmy and Overseas Press Club Award.

The CC trade from the Indians shows that a Tim Hudson would most likely fetch the 3-4 high quality prospects of which 2 would most likely be ready for major league action. I suspect too that Mark and Chipper would also command some nice value.

It's no fun to hear the word REBUILD, but it is time. It's all well and good to try and give Glavine, Smoltz, Chipper and Bobby another run at a title but we simply do NOT have the talent. This is at BEST a 500 team.

And if Francoeur is truly unhappy, let's deal him too and move on.

I want to see Brandon Jones play every day. Let's get a look at Jordan Schafer come September.

It's time for a change in philsophy.

GM sits just shy of $12.oo/ps this afternoon as I write this. Following the June sales numbers which were poor, as expected, the stock spiked. I believe in the near term, GM, is probably good for a trade. It looks to me like the near term low is in at $10.57, set a couple days ago. I actually believe you have upside here to $16.oo. $16.00 is where the sharp sell off began. Set a stop loss at $10.56 and roll the dice. Thats a 33% upside and a 14% downside. Pretty good odds in my trading book.

I believe that near term, the bad news has been overdone and any positive signs that housing has bottomed, or the consumer is showing any life, or oil begins to break, and GM will soar higher.

It reminds me of Citibank back in March, if you had the balls to buy at $18.5, you saw over 26, a gain of 40%.

Don't be surprised to see a similar run in GM, it's just overdone, atleast near term.

Don't be a hog either, $16 would be the max I would shoot for unless market conditions really change to the positive.

After taking the very first caller at her new gig at B98.5, Locke accidentally uttered “Star 94.”

“I’m going to the Dark Side!” she said, moments after realizing her snafu at 5:05 a.m.
Steve McCoy, her on-air partner with Star 94 for 17 years until November, 2007, chuckled and cued the “Star Wars” music. “Ladies and gentleman,” she said, “I bet $100 any time one of us turns to the Dark Side. It took me five minutes!” (The $100 will go to charity.)
Minutes earlier, McCoy opened the show: “As we were saying before we were so rudely interrupted.” (He told my colleague Rich Eldredge in the print edition today that this was his planned joke and he used it.) Here’s that story.
“It’s the dawn of a brand new day,” he noted. “It’s been like Christmas Day for us.” (He hardly slept last night after eight months off the air.) The show did “Quickies From Vikki” gossip, at 40 minutes after the hour from 5 to 7. During the 5 a.m. hour, they took calls, dubbing it “Alive at Five.” And they thanked Scott Slade over at sister station WSB-AM for making the coffee, something they used to do at Star 94.
And while the team is new (Will Gara remains as producer, Mark Arum continues to do traffic and Jeff Hullinger from WSB-AM now does news), the show sounds very much the same.

After the show, I caught McCoy (above) for a few moments. (Vikki had already been whisked away by sales folks eager to show her off to clients.). “It went remarkably smoothly,” he said. “If we hadn’t said it was the first day, I wonder how many listeners would have noticed.”
Tommy Sullivan, who was part of the morning team for more than a decade at Star 94, came by at 7 a.m. Sullivan was not hired by B98.5 but remains co host at “Atlanta & Company” at WXIA-TV. He will join Steve & Vikki every Thursday at 8 a.m. for an unpaid gig to talk about weekend events. Sullivan’s “Atlanta & Company” co-host and former Dave FM host Holly Firfer also came by.
Ludacris, shamelessly promoting his new restaurant Straits, called in (likely the first time he’s ever been on B98.5). Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, Braves veteran pitcher Tom Glavine and McCoy’s neighbor and comic Jeff Foxworthy also checked in to wish them well. “All is right in the world now that you’re back,” Foxworthy said. Ryan Seacrest will be on tomorrow.
While on Star 94, the show aired from 5:30 a.m. to about 9:45 a.m.. At B98.5, they air from 5 a.m. to about 9 a.m. to accommodate the idea that people are out on the road earlier than ever. (The Morning Mess, like the Regular Guys, Frank & Wanda and the Bert Show, all go to 10 a.m., but Giant Brian, Cletus T. Judd and Zack Tyler also end at 9.)
After taking some callers excited about their return, McCoy at 5:17 a.m. said, “We won’t turn this into a lovefest.”
“But we love it!” Locke said.
“We always consider the listeners as family. We love that kind of feeling,” he said. Then he fumbled over the Web site address. (Hey—this is the first hour of the first day!)
According to that B98.5 Web site,, they are using the Chastain Park Amphitheatre Human Regeneration tour for a “return” concert starring Human League, Belinda Carlisle, Naked Eyes, Flock of Seagulls and ABC August 29. Those ’80s nostalgia acts actually preceded the pairing but who’s keeping track? The pair will also be at the Atlanta Pride Festival on Sunday, with Welcome Back Lunches at the different Ray’s restaurants (dates forthcoming.) The site also references a few new elements to the show. “The Ladies Room,” at 8:05 a.m. Wednesdays, will feature women talking about a variety of topics and Robanne’s Style File will include talk about fashion trends.
The Web site bio conveniently omits the name of their predecessor station, Star 94.
At 5:53 a.m., Vikki mocked Steve for going to Italy and then raving about the… gum.
Steve was naturally unapologetic: “I just noticed the flavor lasted for hours! Why can’t we have this in America?”
“You’re strange,” Vikki said.
She also teased Steve’s dedication to radio. “You will die in a radio station - probably this one!”
Vikki noted she “detoxed” on a beach for two months in North Carolina after she left Star 94 in November.
In his offtime, Steve noted at 7 a.m., he became addicted to the videogame “Call of Duty 4” on the Xbox. “I’m very bad at it,” he cracked. “I’m the only one who has been beaten by the French.”
And Steve & Vikki must be thrilled to have day one endorsements from Jim Ellis Audi as well as Airtran.
It appears they are playing four or six songs an hour, about the same as they did at Star 94, compared to 8 to 10 when Kelly & Alpha were on. So for folks who want less talk and more music and enjoy this style of music, well, you have no place to go for now on the FM airwaves.

The house sits way up Valley Oak Drive and there are three things Your Mama thinks the children ought to know about Valley Oak Drive:1. It's gated...not guard gated, but gated none the less, so no paps or looky-loos roaming around trying to get a look at famous residents puttering on the front lawn or dead-heading there tiger lilies.2. The house Jeff Lewis lived in (and sold) on the last season of Flipping Out is located on Valley Oak Drive.3. The Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie compound is wedged between Valley Oak Drive and Briarcliff Road. Make of that what you will.Property records show that entrepreneurial and mercurial Mister Lewis and his much less colorful bizness partner Ryan Brown purchased this 3,024 square foot 1960 post and beam in March of 2007 for $1,710,000. If our memory serves correct, and it may not at this early point in the morning, they did a fair amount of demolition of the interior spaces before they put it back together again in a behemoth blaze of beige, brown and white...which is pretty much what they always do on their mid-priced flip properties, isn't it? As the naughty stripper in Gypsy says, "You gotta have a gimmick."Here's the thing...if Your Mama is being honest, and we always are, we are worn out by and weary of this particular house flipping gimmick. While there's little to beef about because everything is so damn bland and neutral (except for that tragic two tone sofa in the living room which is a punishable offense) Your Mama is dun–D.U.N.–with this sort of W Hotel meets a Calvin Klein outlet store sort of interior day-core. Sorry Mister Lewis...we love you and your crazy ways, and clearly you know how to make the big bucks flipping houses, however Your Mama would really like to see you expand your repertoire beyond beige. Would it kill someone in the Lewis camp to toss in a little color here and there? Seriously? A little blue rug or some green glass objet d'art? Would that really be so terrible?Anyhoo, given that all the beige furniture and brown fabric are part of the meticulous but over-zealous staging of the property and will be removed when a new owner moves in, let's try to see beyond the beige to the the house itself.Listing information indicates there are 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms in the modestly sized mini-manse that more then a little resembles a motel...an aesthetic reference we don't actually mind that much. A second gate at the bottom of the driveway further ensures the security and privacy of the new owners and listing information indicates that all new systems were added including a comprehensive security system with cameras (more peace of mind for the most paranoid), a whole house audio system and more wall mounted plasma televisions than Your Mama cares to count.Other notable features of the hillside property include long decks running the length of the house that provide an excellent spot to smoke a post-dinner doobie while gazing over the glittering lights of Tinseltown. The master bedroom includes floor to ceiling glazing, a big bathroom with one of those egg shaped soaking tubs that cost a fortune but would never be used by Your Mama or the Dr. Cooter (who do not like to sit in their own filth), and last but certainly not least a "diva" walk in closet. Oooo gurls, looky here, we got a "diva" walk in closet for all the queens who like to line up their sweaters like they live in a Benetton boo-teek. You know that's gonna bring them running up the hill in their Gucci loafers and Range Rovers.Your Mama isn't usually fond or friendly about a front yard masquerading as a backyard, but we certainly understand why in this particular case it was the right thing to do (the view). We can appreciate the arrowhead shaped swimming pool and we can imagine that pool deck is a lovely spot to soak up some sun and read all the gossip glossies. But it's also a long haul to the kitchen from the pool deck so we hope that Mister Lewis and Mister Brown have installed a mini-bar with a refrigerator near the pool because Your Mama is too damn lazy to haul our fat ass up all them stairs to the kitchen whenever we need to refresh our pitcher of gin and tonics.Given the somewhat topsy-turvy state of the market in Los Angeles, Your Mama really hasn't a clue whether this house is priced right or not. We're certain all the Chicken Littles will say it's worth $800,000 and we're sure all the Los Feliz property owners will say it's a steal. The truth may if fact be somewhere in between. Whatever the case, it is Your Mama's humble opinion that if you like livin' in Los Feliz and have several million clams to spend on a house, you could certainly do worse than this.
