What happened to the great season finale that left you wanting more all summer?

Remember Dallas and who shot JR? Or even Laguna Beach and whether Stephen and Kristin would stay together? What the hell has happened to the season finale? 24 last night left nothing to wonder about. Desperate Housewives left you with Edy hanging herself. Brothers and Sisters left you with Justin leaving for Iraq. The Unit left off with Jonas hiding out in the caribbean and Bob sent to find him by the CIA. Hardly thrilling stuff that will keep me up nights wanting more. It appears the days of the great season finale are over.
